<image:caption>Atlantic storms have pounded legendary caves and blow-holes from the cliffs along Mayo's megalithic north coast. Here at Downpatrick Head, the Annals of the Four Masters have recorded that the Dún (fort) was cut off by the sea in 1393, leaving inhabitants stranded until they were rescued by ropes from the mainland. Their archaeological remains can be seen on Google Earth.

More stories and legends about Dún Briste have been posted by the Mayo Historical And Archaeological Society.</image:caption>

<image:caption>From "The Way That I Went" by Robert Lloyd Praeger, published in 1937:

The Gap of Dunloe, which cuts the Reeks off from their natural continuation on the north, is a deep Glacial overflow channel, formed by a torrent when the ice lay piled high on the lower grounds around that this was the easiest point of escape for the marginal streams. But one can scarcely view it in peace on account of the cloud of human gadflies which infests it, attracted thither by the stream of tourists passing through it on Killarney's favourite lake and mountain excursion.

Off-season the Gap is a wild and remote pass though the Purple Mountains and Macgillycuddy's Reeks into the Black Valley beyond and is well worth traversing slowly and "in peace"!</image:caption>

<image:caption>A remote cross-roads in the Wicklow Mountains, the Sally Gap is often impassable during winter.

The view looks north to Kippure along the Military Road, built by British Army engineers between 1800 and 1809 to gain access from Dublin to the strongholds of insurgent hold-outs after the rebellion of 1798.

Today the Military Road is a scenic route from the city through some of the most beautiful locations of the Garden County.</image:caption>

To the north, Fraughan Rock Glen and Glenmalure are steeped in history, legend, rebellious folklore and song!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Founded by Saint Ciarán in 548, Clonmacnoise was built on the shores of the great north/south route of the Shannon River, and the east/west route of the Esker Riada. For a millenium, it was the foremost Celtic city of religon and learning, withstanding attacks by the Irish, Vikings and Normans - before being ruined in 1552.

It still remains a centre of heritage and pilgrimage and, in 1979, Clonmacnoise was visited by Pope Saint John Paul II.</image:caption>
